Also anything even vaguely critter-like, be it mammalian, reptilian or insectival. Decay, as opposed to the merely antique, is also rampant, imbued with attitude or lush with metaphor.Despite a punishing retail climate, or what David Alhadeff, the owner of the Future Perfect in Brooklyn, calls “the economic thing,” merchants and makers of the decorative arts reported that anything that hints of the hand — indie crafter, artisan, sculptor or even a member of a Dutch (or Brooklyn) design collective — is still selling.“People respond much more to authentic, human-centric design now,” said Chee Pearlman, a design consultant. “As opposed to the extruded-plastic sort from China. It’s clearly a time for genuine connection to the objects in our lives.”Or as Grace Bonney, creator of DesignSponge, the craft-centric design blog, put it: “Vintage has been massive this year. So has the artisanal look, anything that’s handmade or pretends to be handmade.”“People are taking ‘buy local,’ one step further,” Mr. Kalin said of his four-and-a-half-year-old craft mall. “Knowing where your food comes from, or your clothes, is extending to wanting to know where your dining room table comes from. It really matters. And I think what makes gifts in particular special is knowing there’s a person who made it and a story behind it. I think people want to buy things that tell stories, especially in an age when so few store-bought items tell stories.”<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/26/garden/26gift.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&sq=gifts%20that%20tell%20a%20story&st=cse&scp=1" style="font-weight: bold; It sells classic examples of American work-wear, like chambray shirts, that are produced in Japan with old American machines and the deadstock of American button and zipper makers. With the geeky solemnity of a rare seed catalog, the store’s Web site declared of Flat Head, one of its lines: “Probably the finest construction ever seen on button-down shirts.”

You can almost picture a group of guys in Tokyo or Osaka trying to get the exact specifications of a 1950s boondocker shirt from Sears, but that is not what is interesting about Self Edge. What is interesting is that it’s there at all.

The pattern of the recession has been to close stores, lay off workers and reduce inventories to a bare nub of excitement. Pop-up stores have lent a small thrill to the scene, but pop-up stores reflect a weak economy; otherwise, landlords would have those spaces rented to the hilt.

But nothing quite conveys the confusion and sense of retail sclerosis as the high-end ladies boutique, lights on and empty, its owner selling the same six fabulous designers as everyone else, the same droopy China-made knit that shouldn’t cost $600 but somehow does, and not a chance, barely a glimmer of hope, that enough customers will care to buy something.

Inevitably, new stores open. Here in New York there is an abundance of retail space, real estate experts say. Rents are 20 to 40 percent lower than a year ago, and landlords are often willing to give better terms, like longer leases. But is there a vision behind these stores? It's taken right from the kiln, to the shipping box and onto the back of the UPS truck. So there is nothing in the studio to sell. The work involved in doing retail shows is so grueling that I quit that years ago and my annual studio sale is invitation only to friends and family. So the only place to get my work is through my galleries.
I know from experience that people really like to know the artists background, what differentiates this work from other similar pieces, what techniques were used, the artists thoughts about the line. Years ago, before desktop publishing, galleries would beg craftspeople to get slick bio cards made with photos and resumes because they understood how much this info could help sell the work. I know that in the era of simple web searches that contacting the artist and going around the gallery is easy and galleries who have supported their artists shouldn't risk losing sales. I'd love to hear from galleries, craftspeople and long-time clients who have creative ideas on how to handle this problem. I think having my information displayed with my work would enhance the experience of shopping within the gallery space, instead of online!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_g2VfK7DhBuk/RdTG3JyduuI/AAAAAAAAACY/eEuHegc4hQ8/s200/DSCN2439.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5031865334502374114" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_g2VfK7DhBuk/RdTG3JyduvI/AAAAAAAAACg/iROVjdrPsI4/s200/DSCN2453.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5031865334502374130" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_g2VfK7DhBuk/RdTG3ZyduwI/AAAAAAAAACo/4hQWTAq2pVQ/s200/DSCN2477.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5031865338797341442" />

Royce Yoder

Check out wonderful potter and great friend Royce Yoder's work.
